Was lucky enough to play The Berkshire (Blue) course today with course manager Chris Lomas. The course is a Herbert Fowler (1928) design and a classic heathland gem located near Ascot in Berkshire (20 miles south west of London).

There are two great courses onsite with heather in abundance. The interesting point of the courses is that heather, natural features and slope play such an important part of the golf course strategy. Over the 2 classic courses there are only 69 bunkers with very few fairway bunkers.

It is refreshing to play such a course where the playing strategy is not solely dictated by bunkering but uses the natural landscape/ features to signal the path to success. In modern golf course design we should adopt this theory more often as we often see new golf courses too realiant of bunkering as the strategic roadmap.

Make bunkers count if and when they are used.

The wow factor bunkers.
