TPL begins work to enhance The Richmond Golf Club in Surrey >> |
|
|
Thomson Perrett & Lobb has started course renovation work at The Richmond Golf Club in Surrey.
The private members' club is just 10 miles from central London and was designed by Tom Dunn. It was founded in 1891 and has strong royal connections - HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, is currently club patron.
Principal Tim Lobb said: "It is a great privilege for Thomson Perrett & Lobb to be working on enhancements to a golf course steeped in such history. The Richmond Golf Club is in a lovely setting, adjoining Royal Richmond Park, and we hope our work will grow the golf course's reputation even further."

 |
Initially TPL is concentrating its efforts on the par 5 11th hole but it is working with the club to highlight other potential areas for improvement.
Tim added: "We're re-shaping the existing bunkering on the 11th hole and we are also adding some new bunkers. The result will be that golfers will get much more enjoyment from the initial work on the 11th hole and find the additional bunkers a challenging and strategic feature of the course."
John Maguire, General Manager of The Richmond Golf Club, added: "The changes Thomson Perrett & Lobb are making will make a real difference to the quality of our golf course. We're really happy with the suggestions TPL came up with and I know the members are eagerly anticipating playing on the new look design once it is completed."

TPL to design course at unique Oman location >> |
|
|
Thomson, Perrett & Lobb has been appointed to design the initial golf course at Al Madina A'Zarqa, the most significant real estate infrastructure project in the Sultanate of Oman.
TPL will capitalise on the unique location of the course, sitting as it does adjacent to the Indian Ocean, in the design. The surrounding properties and hotels will have spectacular views from their elevated location overlooking the golf course.
The project company, Blue City Company 1 (BCC1), are the real estate development business tasked to deliver Phase 1 of the development, which includes the TPL 18-hole championship quality course.

Adjacent to the course will be a gated golf community, a clubhouse, restaurants and other ancillary amenities to compliment the varied styles of high quality residences and hotels to be constructed.
Ross Perrett, principal at TPL, said: "Al Madina A'Zarqa is one of the most exciting and unique developments in Oman, if not the Middle East. It is very appealing to be able to play a part in the development of this pioneering project."
Richard Russell, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BCC1, said: "At Al Madina A'Zarqa we are building a new city to ultimately become an integral component of the continued visionary economic development of the Sultanate of Oman."
We look forward to keeping you posted as the design develops over the coming months.

Egyptian beach resort takes shape >> |
|
|
Work on the El Ein Bay golf development in Egypt, where Thomson Perrett & Lobb have designed an 18-hole resort-style golf course, is well underway with six holes already shaped and being prepared for grassing.
The El Ein Bay complex, which will comprise the golf course, 200 luxury villas, three apartment precincts and a large golf practice facility, is ideally located and is the closest beach resort to the country's capital, Cairo.

Tim Lobb commented: "Construction started on the golf course in December last year and we've continued to make excellent progress. This is going to be a special, fun-to-play resort-style golf course, serviced with some great facilities."

Turnberry is fit to challenge the world's best >> |
|
|
Five times Open Champion and Chairman of Thomson Perrett & Lobb, Peter Thomson, predicts this year's Open Championship at Turnberry represents one of the toughest tests of golf...especially if the wind decides to blow.
Peter last played Turnberry in the '77 Open, eventually won by Tom Watson, but this year he'll watch with special interest as Irishman Padraig Harrington tries to emulate Thomson's yet-to-be-repeated back-to-back hat-trick of Open wins (Peter won the Championship in '54, '55 and 1956).
He said: "The course is as tough as any on the current roster and its position on a big, long, lovely piece of coastal land makes it a superb championship course for the modern golfer. To make it a real challenge though, the wind has to blow."
 |
| Peter Thomson believes this year's Open Championship venue Turnberry is one of the toughest tests in golf |
But Thomson still harbors a concern about how Majors are being ruined by the continued development in equipment, primarily the golf ball, and makes an example of this year's Masters tournament at Augusta.
"It is such a shame to see a great golf course like Augusta belittled by the developments in the golf ball. Anyone that is deeply involved in the game wants to see a tournament golf ball introduced as a matter of urgency.
"Augusta has been stretched and stretched and it's made no difference whatsoever. The ball is the culprit here and until that is adjusted Augusta will never get back to its very best. Tour players are, quite simply, driving the ball too far these days," he added.
Thomson also fears that modern day golfers don't need some of the skills players in his era had to combat to become Major winners.
He continued: "We had to learn how to hold the golf ball against the wind, especially on the links courses, but the modern golf ball and its ability to cut through any gust means players today don't have to master this skill. This is a serious matter in the administration of the game, as far as I'm concerned."
