Our new office in South Africa >> |
| |
TPL's Andrew Goosen stands outside the new TPL office in Cape Town,
South Africa. |
To service a growing demand for services on the African continent, TPL has opened a new Cape Town office, being managed by Andrew Goosen, who previously worked in the UK practice, but has moved back to his native South Africa as TPL's Senior Design Associate (Africa).
Andrew has already played a significant role in TPL's Egyptian projects, New Giza and El Ein Bay, and he will continue to manage both these business interests, and those of future African clients, from his new base.
Commenting on this important step for the TPL business, Principal, Tim Lobb, said: "We have been monitoring the development of golf in this region for some time and the creation of our new African office, coupled with the continent's growing profile as a golf destination, is a logical progression which will allow us to closely manage both new and existing work."
This expansion rekindles great memories for the company's five-time Open Champion, Peter Thomson, who had many head-to-head sporting encounters with the great South African golfer, Bobby Locke. The pair became good friends and toured the former Rhodesia and other parts of Africa, playing a series of exhibition matches during the 1950s and 60s.

Investigating new opportunities around the globe >> |
As the growth in the game reaches new emerging markets, TPL is aiming to be part of the pioneering work ahead.
| The dramatic Mozambique coastline...a perfect location for a world-class golf course? |
TPL was part of a recent working group that visited a stunning coastal site in Mozambique, where Senior Design Associate, Andrew Goosen, looked at the feasibility of creating a golf course as part of a major leisure development.
| Beautiful inland natural water features add to the attraction of this Mozambique site. |
"The Mozambique trip highlights the opportunities open to us in new, emerging markets and it underlines the importance of TPL opening our office in South Africa. We are also discussing projects in Zambia and Mauritius, all of which are hugely exciting for the business," said Andrew.

Re-building the 'Terracotta Warriors' golf course >> |
"Courses abound in many forms, but the very best are set in beautiful natural settings of tranquility and beauty," said five-time Open champion Peter Thomson, founder of TPL, in his opening speech at a ceremony to mark rebuilding work being undertaken by TPL's Australian sister company, Thomson Perrett, at Xian International Golf Club in China.
| 3rd Hole greenside bunkering under construction. |
Set in a stunning landscape at the foot of Mount Zhongnan in historic Xian, home of the famous 'Terracotta Warriors', the existing course at Xian International Golf Club will be completely re-built, only the mature Cedars and other trees species, currently being transplanted, will be retained.

The new complex will also feature a 5-star hotel and conference facility, a new clubhouse and a residential development. And given the Chinese government's restrictions on developing new golf courses on viable agricultural land, the total rebuild at Xian may indicate a future trend of renovating existing courses on currently dedicated golf sites.
Peter added: "Our aim and hope is to enhance the nature of the land, as befits this site of great beauty, so that golf can be played with an uplifted spirit."

First phase of The Richmond Golf Club re-bunkering completed >> |
The first phase of TPL's major re-bunkering project at The Richmond Golf Club, Surrey, has been successfully completed.
TPL has overseen a complete review of the Tom Dunn designed course, which opened in 1891, and has given special attention to bunkering, including the renovation and reshaping of existing bunkers and the addition of new, strategic hazards.

All the bunkers have been re-constructing by the in-house green keeping team at the Club and under the supervision of Andrew Goosen during the winter of 2010.
The Richmond Golf Club is an historic private members club adjoining Royal Richmond Park, 10 miles from central London and the iconic clubhouse, Sudbrook Mansion, is a Grade 1 listed building completed in 1720.

Eleven holes at El Ein Bay in Egypt now grown in >> |
Visitors and resident golfers in Egypt are enjoying the grown in first eleven holes of the par-72 TPL-designed El Ein Bay Golf Course, a first-class development designed as a weekend retreat for Egyptians and a leisure destination for golfers from overseas.
| The course at El Ein Bay is growing through well, as the fairways and greens
become well defined. |
Incorporating a large practice facility, the 6,100-metre golf course, sitting within a 237-acre plot of land, is conveniently situated just 122km from Cairo. The remaining holes will be added in 2012.
The resort sits on the Red Sea, one of the warmest in the world, and the beautiful all-year-round climate allows for the development to be surrounded with healthy greenery as well as maintaining the golf course in prime condition. |

When was TPL established?
Thomson Perrett & Lobb’s origins date back to 1965 when Peter Thomson, the five-times British Open Champion, formed the founding design practice based in Melbourne, Australia. Since then, the company has expanded and opened a further office in Beijing and, in 2004, Tim Lobb joined Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett to head up TPL in London, giving the business a truly global reach.
