Welcome to the first Thomson Perrett & Lobb newsletter of 2010.

After a busy 2009 we move forward into the new decade with current developments progressing well and some exciting new projects to tell you about.

First, there is news of significant new work at two historic courses near London – The Berkshire Golf Club and The Richmond Golf Club. TPL has been entrusted to consult on and oversee work on these wonderful, old courses.

We will also update you on our projects in Dubai – Dubai Golf City and The Emirates Golf Club.

TPL's expertise as specialists in bunker restoration and modernisation was underlined when industry leaders attended our bunker seminar at Burhill Golf Club, Surrey, UK. You can read a full report on the day below.

You'll find all our latest news here – and on our new-look website: www.tpl.eu.com. If you would like to contact us please e-mail Tim Lobb: tlobb@tpl.eu.com.

The Berkshire & The Richmond appoint TPL >>
Thomson Perrett & Lobb has been appointed to consult on and oversee important design work on two historic courses close to London – The Berkshire Golf Club, one of the UK's Top 100 Courses, and The Richmond Golf Club, Surrey.

The Berkshire, which features two of the finest, traditional heathland golf courses, with 69 bunkers in total, has appointed TPL to analyse the playing strategy on both courses and return the bunkering to a more traditional look, while using modern construction techniques and specifications to ensure longevity.

Tim Lobb said: "We are looking at incorporating the heathland elements, including heather, native grasses and rougher edges, into the bunker complexes, to give them an authentic look but with a slightly more modern feel. They will be constructed to the highest technical specification to ensure good playability, maintenance and longevity."

TPL will refer to historic data and photography as it looks to integrate bunkers into the strategy of golfers as they plot their way around the course.

An in-depth analysis and consultation with the club will take place for the remainder of this year, with work likely to start next year.

Meanwhile, at The Richmond Golf Club, TPL will oversee a complete review of the Tom Dunn designed course, which opened in 1891, with special attention to bunkering, including the renovation and reshaping of existing bunkers and the addition of new, strategic hazards.

Work will be completed in two stages, from September 2010 and then again from September 2011, over the winter months.

TPL hosts industry leaders for bunker seminar >>
Thomson Perrett & Lobb, hosted golf industry leaders for a seminar on bunkering, embracing the three disciplines of design, construction and maintenance.

The seminar, held at Burhill Golf Club, Surrey, brought together golf course architects from across the globe and golf course managers from leading golf clubs including Sunningdale, Wentworth, The Berkshire, Walton Heath and The Emirates Golf Club.

TPL Bunker Seminar
Delegates at the TPL hosted Bunker Seminar held at Burhill Golf Club, Surrey.

The 29 delegates joined TPL's Tim Lobb and Andrew Goosen to discuss the various aspects of bunkering, and listen to presentations from companies specialising in the bunker construction.

Tim Lobb, who chaired the seminar, said: "We wanted to bring golf industry leaders together, and the subject of the seminar is one close to every course architect, developer and manager. Bunkers have to be designed, built and maintained and to have such knowledge in one room discussing the subject so deeply, intensely and passionately was great."

Craig Haldane, The Emirates Golf Club course superintendent, travelled from Dubai to be at the seminar. He said: "It was excellent to have so many industry experts sitting around a table talking about a simple hazard – it was well worth the trip."

TPL is planning to host similar seminars on various topics of golf course design and management in the future.

Dubai Golf City >>
Dubai Golf City, Thomson Perrett & Lobb's latest project in the Middle East, is nearing completion with 14 holes grassed and ready for play.

The par 71, 6,300-metre layout features an advanced strain of grass known as Paspalum Platinum, which not only copes particularly well in hot climates, but it requires less irrigation than other grasses and, above all, is salt water tolerant.

The course sits between the Dubai Polo Club and the Dubai Bypass Road on prime elevated land some 40-metres above sea level, commanding superb views across the emirate.

Emirates design update >>
Thomson Perrett & Lobb, who were last year appointed to oversee the modernisation of the Emirates Golf Club's flagship Majlis Course, has now completed the design phase of the programme.

TPL carried out an audit of the course's bunkering, suggesting the removal, repositioning and reconstruction of a number of bunkers, and proposing several other changes to bring the course up to modern standards.

Tim Lobb, said: "The design process is now complete and everyone involved in the project is looking forward to implementing these ideas. The next phase of the project is to close the course and begin with the earth works and construction of the bunkers, which we hope to start July 2010."

News from Melbourne
Thomson Perrett to design 36-hole development in China >>
Thomson Perrett, the Melbourne office of TPL, will design a new 36-hole development in Qinzhou, China.

The Seaside New Town Golf course development is a very exciting project, located two and a half hours drive from Nanning, a 90-minute flight west of Hong Kong.

The first 18 holes will be built on reclaimed land from the degraded river flats and fish farms, which will be transformed into a gently undulating links style course.

The second 18 holes will wind among large, landscaped valleys and will feature high, elevated tees, offering expansive views of the river and beyond.

Justin Trott, project architect, said: "This development is unique in that it will feature two golf courses of totally contrasting styles - Links Course and Mountain Course. As a designer, this will make this project very special."
