It's a very special month for Thomson Perrett & Lobb as its chairman, five times Open Champion Peter Thomson celebrates his 80th birthday. To mark this milestone this month's newsletter includes some tributes from the greatest players in the world – Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player – who all competed alongside Peter during his professional playing days.
We'll also update you on some exciting news from TPL's project in Turkey, Carya Golf Club, we announce a partnership with the Club Managers Association of Europe, and reveal some developments from New Giza in Egypt where TPL is constructing an 18-hole golf course in the shadows of the ancient Pyramids.

Peter Thomson, chairman of TPL celebrated his 80th birthday (yesterday) with family and friends in Australia.

To mark the occasion he also received tributes from three of the game's legends, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer, who also turns 80 later this year. In the glowing tributes, the 'big three' acknowledge Peter's influence on the game of golf and recollect some key moments in their careers when they competed against Peter.
The five times Open champion and the last player to win a hat-trick of Open Championships (1954, '55 and '56) is as active as ever taking a day-to-day interest in developing the Australian and UK-based golf course design businesses. Peter even finds time to average three rounds of golf per week playing off a 5 handicap.

TPL's Carya Golf Club to host Turkey's first Challenge Tour event for 11 years >> |

Carya Golf Club, TPL's acclaimed heathland inspired course in Belek, Antalya, has been announced as the venue for Turkey's first European Challenge Tour event in 11 years.
The course, regarded as one of the finest on Turkey's Mediterranean Coast, will stage the Turkish Challenge, the Tour's opening event of the 2010 season, April 26-29.
The Turkish Challenge, sanctioned by the Turkish Golf Federation, is part of a three-year agreement between the Challenge Tour and Carya Golf Club and heralds the start of an exciting partnership that will help promote the Antalya region as a golfing destination.

Principal, Tim Lobb, said: "Carya Golf Club has been open for less than a year, yet it looks as if it has been established for years. We, and everyone involved in this project, are delighted the Challenge Tour will be coming to Carya Golf Club."
TPL is currently building Carya GC's Short Game Academy area, featuring bentgrass target greens – a first for any practice facility in Turkey.

Thomson Perrett & Lobb has become the first golf design firm to be approved as an Official Supplier to the Club Managers Association of Europe.
TPL already advises a number of golf courses managed by CMAE members, and will now offer its full range of consultancy, planning design, course renovation and restoration services to all CMAE members.
Speaking at The Berkshire Golf Club, where TPL has been advising club Secretary and CMAE President Lt. Col. John Hunt and course manager Chris Lomas, Tim Lobb said: "TPL is probably best known for our work designing and planning new golf courses, however we also have experience and a passion for assisting established clubs, giving an unbiased opinion on naturally occurring and lingering problems or outdated design philosophies associated with older venues throughout Europe."

MGM Grand Hotel planned for New Giza >> |

TPL's golf course at New Giza, Egypt, will be joined by a 550-room MGM Grand Hotel, offering spectacular views of Cairo and the famous pyramids of Giza.
Parent company, MGM Mirage, already owns and operates 16 properties, including the world-famous MGM Grand Las Vegas, and sees the New Giza master plan as 'extraordinary'.

TPL has designed the New Giza golf course on desert hills with spectacular views to the ancient monuments and it includes at least one tee shot where golfers will be required to line up with the Pyramids.
The New Giza masterplan, a landmark development for Egypt, will include residential areas, a resort, university, school, hospital plus a dedicated public transport system. The hotel is expected to open in 2013.

The Berkshire welcomes TPL Golf Day >> |

Clients, friends and business professionals from the world of golf gathered at The Berkshire Golf Club to compete for the Thomson Cup in the third TPL Golf Day.

Twenty-four guests played a Stableford competition over the stunning Blue Course with John McGuinness, a director of Cushman & Wakefield (commercial real estate brokers and consultants), eventually taking top honours on the day with 43 Stableford points.
He said: "It's a pleasure to attend this very social and relaxed event and it's an added bonus to play well and win on such a beautiful golf course."
Following the golf, guests also listened to congratulatory messages from the likes of Peter Alliss and Arnold Palmer who had sent tributes to TPL chairman, Peter Thomson, who turned 80 this month.

36-holes planned for Sha River resort in China >> |

Visionary business developer, Wang Fuxian has engaged the services of Thomson Perrett (Melbourne, Australia office) to masterplan and design two golf courses for an exciting development that is located on the banks of the Sha River in Luohe City, Henan, which is half-way between Beijing and Shanghai, China.
The new tourist resort will incorporate three hotels, hot springs spa and resort, villas, apartments, convention centre and two Thomson Perrett golf courses.
After a recent site visit by Principal Ross Perrett and Project Architect Warren Duncan, Perrett said: "Mr Fuxian has acquired a beautiful site on the banks of the Sha River and its natural sandy fertile soils will form a great foundation for building a championship golf facility."

When was TPL established?
Thomson Perrett & Lobb’s origins date back to 1965 when Peter Thomson, the five-times British Open Champion, formed the founding design practice based in Melbourne, Australia. Since then, the company has expanded and opened a further
office in Beijing and, in 2004, Tim Lobb joined Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett to head up TPL in London, giving the business a truly global reach.
