Welcome to Thomson Perrett & Lobb's first newsletter of 2009, and we'd like to start by wishing you all a Happy New Year.

There have been some exciting developments at TPL over the last couple of months. Most notably the opening of Carya Golf Club, TPL's heathland inspired course on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.

TPL also played an important part in the prestigious Asian Golf Business Summit at China's Mission Hills Golf Club, where TPL partner Ross Perrett played a leading role.

Finally, TPL's London-based design associate Andrew Goosen had an extra reason to celebrate over the Christmas period as he returned to his native South Africa to marry fiancée Kirsten Lorenz.

You'll find all our latest news here – and on our new-look website: www.tpl.eu.com. If you would like to contact us please e-mail Tim Lobb: tlobb@tpl.eu.com.

Carya Golf Club opens for play >>
Carya Golf Club, TPL's new heathland inspired golf course in Turkey, opened for play in November 2008.

Located on the Mediterranean coast in Belek, near Antalya, Carya Golf Club is set among pine and eucalyptus woodland on rolling sand hills.

Inspired by the classic heathland courses found in the UK, such as Sunningdale and The Berkshire, nearly one million heather sprigs have been planted around the course, giving it a distinct appearance. In a first-of-its-kind project, the heather was propagated on site in specially constructed glasshouses.

The free flowing holes run between the trees and across a dramatic sand ridge. From the Championship tees, the 7,186-yard (6,570 metres), par 72 course, is a demanding test of golfing strategy – while tourists playing from the Regular tees (6,366 yards / 5,821 metres) will appreciate the generous fairways and enjoyable approaches.

Peter Thomson said: "The layout of the course is unique to the region as despite being so close to the beach, the landscape is similar to the heathland courses near London that I rate among the world's best – and this was the vision that inspired the design for Carya Golf Club. The use of heather characterises the terrain of the course and gives it a distinct appearance."

Former R&A secretary Sir Michael Bonallack OBE players Carya Golf Club recently and was impressed.

He said: "The bunkering is a strong feature of Carya Golf Club and I could see the influence of Dr Alister MacKenzie. Congratulations on a fine new course and a wonderful layout with superb new bunkering."

Ross Perrett plays leading role at Asian Golf Summit >>
Ross Perrett played a pivotal role in the prestigious Asian Pacific Golf Development Summit, December 2-4 at Mission Hills in China.

Ross chaired a panel session on 'Golf Development - the case for golf course communities'. The panel and audience engaged in a discussion followed by a question and answer session on the resurgence of interest in golf course communities in Asia.

"It was a great honour to be asked to chair a panel at such a prestigious event and the discussions were very productive," said Ross. "The audience asked some intelligent questions which led on to an insightful discussion about golf development."

TPL's London-based design associate Andrew Goosen had an extra special festive break as he tied the knot with fiancée Kirsten Lorenz in their native South Africa.

The happy couple held their wedding in the chapel of Kirsten's old school, Epworth Girls' School, in the historic town of Pietermaritzburg.

Following the nuptials the wedding party headed to Granny Mouse Country House in the renowned region of Kwazulu Natal.

The newlyweds then travelled on to Mauritius for a week-long honeymoon, soaking up the sun.

Andrew said: "It was the most beautiful day of our lives spent with those closest to us. It was an absolute dream come true."
