Welcome
to Thomson Perrett & Lobb's latest e-newsletter.
This month has seen some exciting announcements at
TPL, from official opening dates to receiving prestigious
awards. Our development at Carya Golf Club, based
in the fast developing Belek region of Turkey, is nearing
completion and now has an official opening date set
for November. TPL's Philip Spogard, who is overseeing
the project at Carya was in the news himself recently
as he was named TORO Student Golf Course Architect
of the Year by EIGCA. We have also welcomed a new
course design associate on board at TPL, with South
African Andrew Goosen, who has previously worked
on designing the new Belfry complex, joining the
team. There are also updates and insights from our
various developments around the world.
You'll find all our latest news here and on our new-look website: www.tpl.eu.com. If you would like to contact us after reading this newsletter, please e-mail Tim Lobb: tlobb@tpl.eu.com.

TPL golf course architect Philip Spogard has won a prestigious award from TORO and the European Institute of Golf Course Architects.
Spogard, 30, from Denmark, received the TORO Student Golf Course Architect of the Year Award at the recent EIGCA Annual General Meeting at the PGA Golf de Catalunya resort in Spain.
His exceptional achievements, accomplished while studying for the two-year EIGCA Professional Diploma in Golf Course Design, were recognised with the presentation of the prestigious bi-annual award by Andy Brown, TORO corporate accounts manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Ross Perrett met Phillip at the 2005 EIGCA Conference held at St Andrews and was impressed by his character, intelligence and passion for golf course architecture and offered him an internship at Thomson Perrett's Melbourne office. He subsequently joined TPL in 2006. Phillip has also completed degrees in law and landscape architecture.
TPL partner Ross Perrett said: “TPL is proud to have such an exciting young designer working on its growing portfolio of quality international golf developments. This recognition merely confirms what we already knew, that in Philip Spogard we have one of the most exceptional young talents in the business.”
Spogard completed the EIGCA diploma program top of a class of accomplished international talent – including some architects who had already designed several courses. Spogard said: “I am extremely proud to receive this recognition, as it is probably the most prestigious award any young golf course architect can win in the golf course design industry.”

Andrew Goosen |
TPL has strengthened its world-class design team by recruiting a South African design associate – Andrew Goosen.
Goosen, 31, from Cape Town, a graduate of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects' Professional Diploma in Golf Course Design, joins TPL as a design associate based in London.
TPL partner Tim Lobb, said: “Thomson Perrett & Lobb's sustained growth has seen us acquire several high quality projects across the Europe, Middle East and Africa region in recent times, and as a result we have been able to attract the brightest and best young talent to work with us.
“We had 20 applicants from across three continents, but Andrew stood out and has been recruited for his project management experience in the design world and for the commitment he has shown to having a career in golf course design.”
Goosen previously worked for Reardon Smith, Europe's leading hotel and resort designer. He was responsible for project managing the design work for a 600-bedroom hotel, new PGA Headquarters and driving range proposed for The Belfry and Drax Hall, a luxury golf resort and hotel complex in Jamaica.
“It's incredible for me to realise my dream of working for an internationally renowned golf course architecture practice,” said Goosen. “It is rare that you get to combine your true passions in life at work, and I look forward to adding real value to TPL projects.”

| Carya date set >> |
|
|
Carya Golf Club, TPL's development in the popular golfing region of Belek, Turkey is set to open its doors for play on November 24.
With the opening date now set preparations are ahead of schedule with all the greens and fairways seeded to allow the playing surfaces to be fully established and in pristine condition for the opening.
 |
Carya Golf Club is set to be Turkey's first heathland style course |
The Belek region will be awash with golf courses, but Carya promises to stand out from the rest due to its unique English feel, as it is the only Heathland inspired course in the region.
Carya will introduce heather as part of the design exactly as it is seen on courses like Sunningdale and The Berkshire in the UK. Once open for play Carya will boast close to one million heather plants, which will have been propagated on site.
TPL's Philip Spogard, who has overseen the project, said: “It is the ambition that the course should present new standards for golf design, course conditioning and hospitality for the region.”

where the pyramids will provide the ideal
driving line on the 1st hole
|
The design at our New Giza project in Cairo is developing well. Here is a sneak preview of what is to be expected.
Golfers teeing up on the first hole at New Giza in Egypt will have a perfect line for the middle of the fairway – the pyramids of Giza.
Faced with a split fairway, the golfer's best option is to literally line the driver up with the pinnacle of New Giza pyramid.
The course is situated in an old quarry offering spectacular and dramatic scenery, and if that is not enough, the golfer will experience a number of vistas of the pyramids during the round.
The drama in the immediate landscape will be created through the intelligent use of contrast – texture and colour contrast between rock and water, sand and shrub, and the golf course dissecting its way through the barren landscape.
Holes 12, 13 and 14 (par 5 par 3 par 5 respectively) give the golfer one of the most spectacular experiences in golf. Located in and around 10-15m high quarry walls, the player will have to negotiate their way into, and then out of, the quarry, while avoiding water and sheer walls.
The 12th requires the golfer to carefully and strategically plot their way safely to the hole, the 13th is a 15m drop down par-3 carrying a water at the very bottom of the quarry - club selection will be critical, and 14 is mammoth 605m heroic par-5 played 10m above and adjacent to the 13th.
Construction is programmed to commence later this summer.

News from our Melbourne Office
|
| Victoria's premier facility >> |
|
|
The Ballarat Golf Club, one of Australia's oldest clubs has opened its new Thomson Perrett designed course for play.
Like the original, the new course has a parkland style, which features established conifers and exotic trees and a ground plain of indigenous shrubs and grasses.
 |
18th hole |
Formerly flat and featureless, the site was transformed by 350,000 cubic metres of earthworks and the construction of an extensive network of creeks and wetlands to manage and store the storm water for irrigation purposes.
Given its windy location and length of 6,280 metres, the course has been set up to be challenging for members of all levels.
Since the opening, the club has experienced a rapid growth in membership applications and greatly increased visitor numbers. As it matures, it is anticipated the course will become Victoria's premier regional golfing facility.
Ballarat is a prosperous regional city that was at the heart of the Australian Gold Rush of the 1860s.
