Welcome to Thomson Perrett & Lobb’s e-news issue 3. As we lead up to the Open Championship, we bring news of a prestigious award for the masterplan of Ain Al Emarat, the major residential development and TPL golf course in the United Arab Emirates. Tim Lobb explains how TPL is setting a global standard for sustainable golf course design and Ross reports from our Beijing and Melbourne offices. In a special feature, Peter Thomson shares his thoughts on whether Tiger can make it three Opens in a row at Carnoustie this year. Peter was the last golfer to achieve this remarkable feat, lifting the Claret Jug three times between 1954 and 1956.

Ain Al masterplan wins prestigious industry award >>

Plans for Ain Al Emarat, one of the world’s largest residential and leisure developments, in the United Arab Emirates – featuring a TPL designed golf course – have won a prestigious award.

HOK, global leaders in innovation for the built environment, won the award for best masterplan at the recent BEX 2007 awards, held at the Building Exchange Summit in Valencia, Spain in June.

The Building Exchange awards drew together key figures from the global construction and property supply chain and recognised projects for their innovation, sustainability and collaborations.

David Cutmore, HOK project manager for Ain Al Emarat, said: “This award recognises HOK’s innovation in meeting the challenge of planning a pioneering, sustainable residential community for 120,000 people in a desert environment, with sport and a championship golf course at the heart of it.”

“HOK’s collaboration with TPL is integral to the success of the project, and our successful partnership and shared vision for sustainable design is another reason why the masterplan has received such important critical acclaim.”

Design work on the golf course is already underway with construction at the desert site – overlooked by mountains and featuring rolling sand dunes – likely to start later in the year.

TPL champion sustainable design >>

Sustainability is set to become one of the hottest topics in golf course design and development – and it is an area TPL is already taking a global lead in.

Projects in the UAE and Turkey, in particular, are being highlighted for their environmentally sensitive design and maintenance.

At Carya Golf Club, in Turkey’s Belek region, naturally indigenous heather called Erica Cinerea is being propagated in glasshouses and used on bunker tops and banking to give the course a classic heathland appearance.

TPL has also created a two-hectare outdoor heather nursery to supply the club over the long term.

TPL principal Tim Lobb, said: “TPL is trying to leave an environmental legacy at each of the courses that it builds – not just a great golf course – but a self perpetuating, sustainable entity.”

TPL’s championship golf course at Ain Al Emarat involves sculpting a sustainable course from a xeriscape landscape of desert and waste areas, and has involved several environmental consultants, including ecologists and sports turf maintenance specialists.

Treated effluent from Ain Al’s residential developments will be used to irrigate the golf course and conserve water, and habitat corridors and wildlife zones are a major feature of TPL’s design.

“Good environmentally sensitive design is at the forefront of our practice and leaves a lasting legacy to a community in harmony with their social, cultural and economic surroundings,” added Tim Lobb.

Thomson on Tiger >>

Peter Thomson was the last player to win three

successive Opens – a feat Tiger Woods is trying to achieve this year. So what are Tiger’s chances?

“The Open Championship has always been played to find the best golfer in the world, says Peter”. On current form and record alone, Tiger Woods should be left holding the Claret Jug at Carnoustie this July.

“What sets Tiger Woods apart from other top professional golfers is the way he prepares himself to peak in the Majors. He leaves nothing to chance and concentrates on his physical training, mental preparation and the requirements of the particular golf course he is to play. In my generation, if Sam Snead had prepared like Tiger, he would have won eight Open Championships and 10 US Opens.

“The set-up of the golf course for the Open at Carnoustie in 1999 was disastrous. The golf course preparation got out of control, and the result was a negative course that eliminated many of the top players, and we don’t want to see that again.

“I have always said that deep down you must know what you are doing to succeed in golf, and if you know that, then you don’t have fears, only hopes. Tiger knows this and he relishes being in a position to win. That’s why he can approach this year’s Open with confidence."

NEWS FROM OUR MELBOURNE OFFICE

Golf in Vietnam’s Bay of Dragons >>
Two spectacular links golf courses are to be built
The stunning coastline at Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
on an island in Ha Long Bay, one of Vietnam’s top international tourist destinations, by our Melbourne office.

The courses are Thomson Perrett’s first project in Vietnam and will be built on a sandy peninsula of Tuan Chau island, one of 1,969 tiny islands in Ha Long Bay, known as ‘The Bay of Descending Dragons’ in Vietnamese, and a World Heritage site.

Ross Perrett, principal and lead course designer, said: “Golf is relatively new to Vietnam and until recently the country has had less than 10 courses.”

“Vietnam’s economy is thriving and with a young and dynamic population, golf is set to take off in the same way it has in China, Thailand and Malaysia.”

Vietnam’s population is more than 84 million, with an average age of 25. The country is starting to embrace tourism and development in similar fashion to Thailand, which has 200 golf courses and a population of more than 60 million.

Thomson Perrett will work closely with holistic design company MDM Consultants, on behalf of the Tuan Chau Group, to add the golf courses to an existing tourism infrastructure of hotels and beaches on the island, which is joined to the mainland by a bridge.

The golf courses will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Ha Long Bay.

Thomson Perrett’s Tianjin triple >>
Thomson Perrett is set to masterplan its third project in the Tianjin region of Northern China.

Tuanbo City will be a large, integrated residential, commercial and recreational development including 36-holes of golf built on the site of a low-lying flood plane. The city will have a major sporting focus and has been selected as a venue for the 2013 Asian Games.

Ross Perrett, said: “Tuanbo City will be a community with sport and golf at its very heart, and Thomson Perrett is thrilled to be given the opportunity to further develop the game of golf in the Tianjin region of China.”

Work on the 36-hole complex is set to commence in August. The project will be divided between a private members club and a public access pay and play golf course, both situated around five kilometres from the TP designed golf course at Tianjin Fortune Lake.

Tianjin is a sister city of Melbourne, Australia, and enjoys strong cultural and commercial links. Thomson Perrett’s recently completed Sandhurst golf development in Melbourne will host the inaugural Peter Thomson Corporate Challenge, contested between business leaders from Tianjin and Melbourne, in 2008.

Thomson Perrett’s Tianjin Fortune Lake course has been named as venue for the tournament in 2009.

When was TPL established?

Thomson Perrett & Lobb’s origins date back to 1965 when Peter Thomson, the five-times British Open Champion, formed the founding design practice based in Melbourne, Australia. Since then, the company has expanded and opened a further office in Beijing and, in 2004, Tim Lobb joined Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett to head up TPL in London, giving the business a truly global reach.
